❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Mental Health and Wellbeing
How does Red Oaks support my child’s mental health and wellbeing?
At Red Oaks, wellbeing is part of everyday school life. All staff build strong relationships with pupils and create a safe, nurturing environment. We also teach children about emotions, resilience and coping strategies through our curriculum and provide additional support when needed.
How will I know if my child is struggling in school?
We carefully monitor all children’s wellbeing and will contact you if we have any concerns. However, if you notice changes in your child at home—such as increased worry, low mood or changes in behaviour—we encourage you to let us know so we can work together to support them.
What should I do if I am worried about my child’s mental health?
Please speak to your child’s class teacher in the first instance. You can also contact a member of the safeguarding team. We are always here to listen and will work with you to identify the best support for your child.
What support is available in school?
We offer a range of support, including:
- ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support)
- Small group or 1:1 interventions
- Nurture-based approaches in the classroom
- Pastoral support from trained staff
Support is tailored to meet each child’s individual needs.
What is ELSA support?
ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) sessions provide children with a safe space to talk about their feelings and develop emotional skills. Sessions are carefully planned to support areas such as confidence, friendship, anxiety and self-esteem.
Will I be involved in my child’s support?
Yes. We work closely with parents and carers and believe that partnership is key. We will always keep you informed and involved in any support plans and welcome your input.
Does the school work with outside agencies?
Where appropriate, we work with a range of external professionals such as Early Help services, health professionals and specialist support teams. This ensures children and families receive the right help at the right time.
How does school help children build resilience?
We teach children to understand and manage their emotions, solve problems and develop a growth mindset. Through everyday experiences and supportive relationships, children learn that it is okay to make mistakes and that they can overcome challenges.
How can I support my child’s wellbeing at home?
You can support your child by:
- Keeping open conversations about feelings
- Encouraging routines and good sleep habits
- Spending quality time together
- Reassuring them and listening without judgement
We are happy to offer further guidance if needed.
Who can I contact for help?
If you have any concerns, please contact your child’s class teacher in the first instance. You can also speak to the school office to arrange a conversation with a member of the safeguarding team.
